Rock-A-Bye Chuckie…
Posted by Chuck on November 14th, 2007
You know, I’ve really gotten into sleeping lately. I’ve always slept fairly well, and understood the importance of a good nights sleep. But it’s only in the past few months that I’ve really started looking forward to it. Maybe it’s the extremely vivid dreams I’ve been having. I contribute them to the Chantix prescription I’ve taken for months now. The drug claims that there could be changes in dreaming and yeah, I think they’re right. At first it was weird off the wall shit, like animals talking or being chased by alligators. Now it’s real life, normal stuff….only it’s like it’s really happening. Take last night for example. I was dreaming I was shopping at Target. Normal enough, right? I pushed my buggy (or cart for those of y’all outside the South), through each department where I’d end up having a conversation with different women. At first we’d discuss prices or the quality of certain items then it would progress to topics of a more intimate nature. Each of these departmental flirt sessions would end with the particular lady accidentally brushing the back of her hand against my crotch. See, what did I tell ya…major reality, huh?
The above is not actually the true purpose of this post. I’m more interested in talking today about sleeping habits. I’ve found myself thinking about this each night as I fall asleep, so I thought I might as well go ahead and blog about it. Y’all want to hear about how your old buddy Chuck falls asleep, right?
Here’s how I do it. And remember, this is my system. I do it like this every night. Once I’ve resigned to go to sleep I’ll first turn down the television or shut down the lap top, or down the vodka….which ever is my last downing activity of the night. I’ll then start out on my back for about five to ten minutes. I then turn onto my left side for the same amount of time, give or take, with legs bent making sure my junk is out from between them. After this I flip over onto my stomach with one or both of my arms under my pillow. This is where I’ll usually nod off. If not I’ll then turn onto my right side for the five or ten, then onto my back and I’ll start the process all over again. I’ve done it like this for years. Am I weird? Should I be turning clockwise? What does this say about me?
How about you? How do you drift off?

I haven’t had a really good night’s sleep in…years. Plus, I’m a really light sleeper. It sucks.

And I thought my having to sleep on the same side of the bed and laying out my toiletries in hotel bathrooms meant I had problems…………..
Mix some Prozac with that vodka my friend. You will sleep like a babe no matter the routine.

Same here man. I usually nod off on my left side, with my head on my arm, which is extended out off the bed. I usually try to get to sleep, but then little lady ends up tapping me on the back and saying “Excuse me”, demanding a little nookie time. It never ends, I wanna tell ya.

i stip naked and dance on the dinner table for 30 minutes limber up.
then i hop into the shower
I then put on silk pajamas and a smoking jacket and sip single malt scotch and smoke a pipe while reading mad magazine. My children fan me with palm branches while my wife feeds me grapes
When i retire to the master suite i brush my teeth floss gargle with mouthwash.
i sleep sideways in the bed with my feet and legs all over my wife, she really likes this.
to slip off to dream land i turn on the old bose acustic wave radio and listen to Zamfir, the master of the pan flute, play the songs of my youth.

I have to fall asleep on my right side, arm under my head. Left leg must be propped up on a pillow, head on 2 pillows and another pillow for my left arm to prop on. Pillow count = 4. Now, if Paul is snoring (which he almost always is) I have to have a 5th pillow, to put over my head so I can try to block out the snoring. If it’s really bad, I kick him until he quits.
And the ceiling fan must be on!!

lol…damn Chuckie, I don’t know what it says about you but I’m almost the same way. Flippin’ and floppin’ til I get comfortable.
I HAVE to leave the TV on to fall asleep.

Huh. That’s weird. You almost described my falling asleep routine! Of course I don’t have to get “the junk” out of the way. Then again, I do that with “the girls,” cause falling asleep on your tits doesn’t feel good either.
Wow. Now you’ve made me sleepy.
Oh, and the vivid dreams you have…yeah…that’s me all the time. I usually always wake up and need a nap from my dreams.
BTW…where’s my blog on your sidebar? gee thanks…
Did you get my email about Nip/Tuck? Pretty good, huh?

Pixie - And I’m sure it hasn’t gotten any better with the sweet precious baby!
Sugdad - I do the same thing in hotels. How weird. I also have to have everything packed the night before check out.
FHB - You got it bad my man. Poor you! lol
Snag - Don’t you mean to say that you sleep in fear that your wife will beat the crap out of you in her sleep? Yeah, I know you too well.
Julie - Try kicking him in the nuts. It’s a cure for snoring, or so I’ve heard…
Slick - I was never a tv sleeping kind of guy till Susan. She’s taught me to sleep with it on every night. As long as the volume is very low (down around # eight) then I can deal.
Bec - Good to hear from you! Reckon y’all got the internets back up and working! I emailed you back…let’s discuss.

Sleeping habits huh? I can fall asleep pretty much anywhere if I’m tired, but when I go to bed I start out on my left side with my head on 2 pillows and my left arm between them and my right hand on top of them beside my face. I don’t stay that way very long though. I turn to the center of the bed, on my right side, hug a pillow, throw my leg over another one. I sleep with a lot of pillows too…6 to be exact. Speaking of sleep…..I think I need to head that way shortly. Oh, and I can fall asleep with the tv on or off - doesn’t matter.

Mostly on my belly, right arm and shoulder underneath the pillow, with one puppy under the covers curled up between my legs (think no evil!), the other puppy either curled up under my chin, with my left arm over him, or curled up at my back.
I only settle like this when I’m ready to sleep (after reading for a bit), so I go to sleep within seconds of turning the light off.

My mind tends to take a lot wind down. It’s like a computer fan–always running.
I wind down by having a routine. I read a page or two (sometimes more) before bed and then I will listen to old radio shows as I drift off to sleep. I’ve heard the first half of a ton of them a number of times, but there are few I can tell you how they end. LOL

I’m busy chasing a toddler around all day so as soon as I lay/sit/stand still for a moment I’m out.
November 16th, 2007 at 4:21 pm
Lots of pillows. One between the knees, one to hug up to and curled up like a burrito. That’s the only way I can pass out, unless of course it’s Friday night and I drink myself silly.
In that case, I can sleep fully dressed and standing in the hallway.

so did you quit smoking? Christ, when I quit smoking I had the weirdest dreams - man oh man…
Being of the psycho therapist type, I’ve never seen any research about how you fall asleep and personality. There’s a bunch of research on how you sleep in comparison to your mate. The research is “soft” to say the least and usually reported in such fine journals as Cosmo.
I think you’re probably all right.

I can sleep pretty much anywhere anytime. Never had any trouble with sleeping. My usual trick is to pretend to be asleep and then in no time I really am asleep.
Sometimes if I’m trying to sleep at odd hours of the day (like if I’m trying to get to sleep at 7.00pm because I have to be up at 3.00am) I listen to ‘Echoes’ by Pink Floyd. That always does the trick if plan A doesn’t work.

SoSweet - So I suppose sleeping on your stomach is out of the question!
Christina - Our dog sleeps with us sometimes. I couldn’t handle one up near my head though. Good for you!
Micheal - I love old radio shows! I used to listen to them a lot back in college. Had a few LPs that had a lot of the best ones.
Khaki - Yeah, I doubt you have trouble getting to sleep at all!
Diva - Wow, bet you make a fun drunk! lol
Claudia - Yep, been quit for a while now. And true, Cosmo is such a great reference for all kinds of important things! lol
Ed - Listening to Floyd always makes me wish I was stoned!

Small little world, huh? I was a proud graduate of PHS many moons ago. We’re actually coming up on the 20th reunion… sweet Jesus…I’m getting old.
Anyway. I lived in Powell for a few years recently, but decided to go into debt for decades to come when we found and fell in love with a house betwix Clinton and Oak Ridge.
What year did your sis graduate?

HI Chuck.
